Eugène François Suter’s biography has a distinctly international geography. A retrospective account by Hannelore Kyburz in the Horgner Jahrheft (2000) connects his Paris birth with a family from Horgen in Switzerland and follows his career through several European centres of hairdressing.
Family background and training
According to Kyburz, Suter was born in Paris in 1887. His parents had emigrated from the Wührenbach area of Horgenberg, near Horgen on Lake Zurich. This gives his later reputation as a Swiss hairdresser a concrete family context, although birth and family-register entries still need to be checked directly.
Kyburz places his apprenticeship in Waldshut, Germany. Subsequent professional stations included Biel, Lausanne and the Bürgenstock in Switzerland, followed by Rome, Paris and London. This itinerary is valuable as a research guide, not yet a fully documented sequence of employment dates.
London and the development of a method
London became central to Suter’s commercial career. The Horgen account associates him with the presentation of an apparatus called “Eugène” in 1915 and the opening of a permanent-waving salon. The precise meaning of the 1915 date must be established through contemporary advertisements, patents or trade publications; later machines should not automatically be projected back to that year.
A separate historical account of permanent-waving technology describes Suter working with the electrical specialist Isidoro Calvete, whose London workshop was established in 1917. The collaboration is important because it separates the salon operator’s requirements from the engineering of heating elements. The technical and commercial relationship requires further documentary reconstruction.
International business and final years
Kyburz describes the expansion of Eugène-branded equipment and products through an international network of professional users. The company’s own trade magazine, The Eugène Waver, provides a promising route to testing that account against contemporary advertising and instruction.
Suter died in 1943, reportedly aged 56. Kyburz points to a notice in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung of 8 March 1943 and a local article in the Anzeiger des Bezirkes Horgen of 10 March 1943. These original notices have not yet been transcribed for this dossier.
